The first step to shipping construction and agricultural equipment overseas is to submit the required documentation to the freight forwarding company. This may include identification information for the shipper and the consignee, a certificate of title to prove ownership of the equipment, specifications and dimensions of the cargo, and proof of prepayment for the shipping services. Shippers should also let the freight forwarder know of their preferred schedule for shipping. With these requirements met, the shipment can proceed in a timely and efficient manner.

Destination ports overseas may have their own requests for imported cargo, including cleaning requirements and packing requirements. These must be carefully followed so that the cargo is not rejected when it arrives at the port. However, clients should not worry about forgetting a vital requirement, because experienced freight forwarding companies like K International Transport can help clients conform to all standards when shipping overseas.

Heavy Equipment Shipping by Container or Roll-On/Roll-Off Shipping

Agricultural and construction equipment can be transported via roll-on/roll-off (RORO) and container shipping services. RORO is the most common, and typically most affordable, method for equipment that is towable or self-propelling. With RORO, the equipment can simply be driven onto and off of the vessel. For equipment that is static, flat racks and containers can be used. Flat racks are often used for equipment that exceeds the width and height allowable for a traditional container because flat racks only have two sides allowing the bulky equipment to stick out during transport.

With containers, clients must dismantle and load the equipment into a 20ft or 40ft containers and reassemble it when it arrives overseas. Less-than-Container-Load (LCL) shipments allow clients to share a container with other shippers. Clients should keep in mind that when shipping by LCL, large items and multiple boxes must be palletized and secured so that they can be stacked in the container. Valuable and fragile items can be crated. Crates can contain foam, water-tight construction, and other barriers designed to protect the cargo inside the crate during shipment. Palletizing or crating is a must when transporting cargo via LCL, especially for machinery parts.

An experienced freight forwarder like K International Transport can help shippers decide the best shipping method based on the shipper’s cargo, budget, availability, and destination port standards.
