Dreaming of a tropical vacation? Look no further than the beautiful Caribbean Island of Aruba. Known for its stunning beaches, intricate architecture, and insightful museums, Aruba is a delightful place to sit back, relax, and learn about a new culture.

Oranjestad has been the capital city since 1824 and sits along the southern coast of the country. It has always been known as simply “the playa” and is now home to around 30,000 people. In the 19th century, the city was a small village with no name and was heavily influenced by the Dutch. But, after a significant oil discovery and a new hotel zone in the 20th century, the city began to turn into the bustling tourist destination it is today. The city’s main attraction is Fort Zoutman, which was built in 1796 to “protect the city from pirates.” Oranjestad is also home to the University of Aruba, making it a lively place for young people to live.

The city has two main transportation systems, giving it a somewhat metropolitan feel. The tram runs from the beach next to the main port through the whole city. Additionally, a brand-new ferry service connects Aruba to nearby Curacao.

Port Paardenbaai, Aruba

The main port in Oranjestad is Port Paardenbaai, which is located on the western side of the city. It is the eighth-largest port in the Caribbean and can hold five large vessels at a time. It contains five major berths, each with a water depth between 32 and 36 feet. Furthermore, a recent expansion project was designed to create more room for yachts and fishing boats. The port is right next to the city’s festive downtown district and is just two miles from the international airport.

The main cargo port, Barcadera, is a subsection of the Paardenbaai port. It occupies 1.4 million square feet and can handle over 7,500 TEUs in storage capacity. Barcadera’s main feature is a 50-ton gantry crane that spans 250 meters of quay length and can load cargo at 20-30 moves per hour. During high season, the cargo port can also operate as a cruise berth.
